Post-2020 Ford Transit Custom tuning is now available at Llandow Tuning for many 2.0 EcoBlue models that could not previously be remapped through the established workshop routes. The breakthrough centres on the Continental SID212 and SID212 EVO engine control units fitted to later Ford commercial vehicles.
For several years these ECUs kept much of the tuning industry locked out. A workshop could identify the vehicle, carry out diagnostics and see the ECU, but the protected calibration area was not available through the normal read-and-write methods used on earlier Transit Customs. That has now changed. With current SID212 and SID212 EVO protocol support added to our workshop capability, we can offer Ford Transit Custom tuning to owners and operators whose vans were previously turned away.
The new coverage opens the door to vehicle-specific performance remapping, economy tuning, DPF, AdBlue and EGR software work, with the whole calibration planned around the exact van and the way it is used.
Why post-2020 Ford Transit Custom tuning became a different job
Earlier Ford Transit Custom models use ECU generations for which established tuning protocols have existed for years. On those vehicles, a competent workshop can identify the control unit, read or obtain the original calibration, make the required changes and write the revised software using a proven OBD, bench or boot process.
Later 2.0 EcoBlue vans introduced the Continental SID212 and, subsequently, SID212 EVO. These are modern engine controllers built around the Infineon AURIX TC297 processor. They manage the engine's torque model, boost control, fuel pressure, injection, air path, temperature strategies, diagnostics and emissions-control systems as one connected calibration.
The difficulty was not that these ECUs were impossible to diagnose. The difficulty was gaining dependable access to the software areas that have to be read and written for tuning. Stronger ECU security and protected programming routines meant that the usual aftermarket routes could identify the controller without providing the calibration access needed to modify it.
SID212 and SID212 EVO: the ECUs that locked tuners out
“Locked out” is an accurate description of the practical situation workshops faced. A tuning tool might communicate with the Transit Custom and return the ECU identity, hardware number and software version. Diagnostic equipment might still read faults and live data. None of that meant the tool could safely retrieve, modify and reinstall the engine calibration.
For a proper remap, the programming route must do more than recognise the ECU. It needs verified access to the relevant calibration data, dependable writing, checksum handling and a recovery strategy suitable for that exact controller. Until those elements were supported, there was no responsible way to promise a post-2020 Transit Custom remap simply because an older 2.0 EcoBlue could be tuned.
This is why owners of nearly identical-looking vans could receive completely different answers. An earlier Transit Custom might be a routine workshop booking, while the later SID212-equipped model remained unavailable. The difference was inside the ECU and its security, not in the badge on the back doors.
The first breakthrough: bench access and an unlock route
The first useful development was supported bench access. This meant removing the ECU from the vehicle and connecting to it in a controlled workshop setup. Some early solutions also depended on an unlock or patch stage before later programming could continue through the diagnostic port.
That was important progress, but it could add time and dependency to the job. In some cases, the ECU or its data had to pass through a separate specialist service before normal workshop programming became available. The next step: SID212 and SID212 EVO without a separate unlock
Protocol development then moved quickly. New coverage removed the separate unlock requirement for supported SID212 and SID212 EVO applications, giving equipped workshops a much cleaner route into the calibration. We covered that change in our SID212 and SID212 EVO no-unlock update.
The latest step is full OBD support on applicable vehicles. Instead of treating every later Transit Custom as a special ECU-removal or mail-in job, the supported control unit can be approached through the van's diagnostic connection. We now identify the exact ECU and software fitted to the van, then select the appropriate current route. Depending on that identification, the work may use direct OBD access or a supported bench process. The important change is that SID212 is no longer an automatic “cannot be tuned” answer.
Among the first in Wales with current SID212 capability
With these current protocols and the supporting calibration knowledge now available in our workshop, Llandow Tuning is among the first independent tuning centres in Wales able to offer tuning for supported post-2020 Ford Transit Custom models using SID212 and SID212 EVO ECUs.
Access to the ECU is only the beginning of the job. A newly supported programming protocol does not automatically create a good tune. It gives us the route required to retrieve and write the software; the quality of the result still depends on the calibration, the condition of the van and the testing carried out around it.
That distinction matters to us. We combine current programming coverage with diagnostics, data logging and in-house calibration work at our Llandow workshop. The aim is not merely to make a locked ECU accept a file. It is to make the Transit Custom perform the requested job properly.
Performance tuning for the post-2020 Transit Custom
A standard Transit Custom calibration has to suit a huge range of markets, operating conditions and commercial uses. A vehicle-specific performance tune can reshape the torque delivery, improve response and make more effective use of the 2.0 EcoBlue engine's available capacity.
For a working van, the most valuable change is often not a dramatic peak figure. It is stronger, more progressive torque through the engine speeds used every day. That can make the vehicle feel less strained when carrying equipment, joining faster roads, climbing hills or maintaining progress with a loaded van.
We calibrate around the van in front of us rather than treating every SID212 Transit Custom as identical. Engine output, gearbox, software version, vehicle condition and intended use all help shape the finished result.
Economy tuning for vans that work every day
Economy tuning is aimed at useful low- and mid-range torque, smoother part-throttle response and reduced need to work the engine unnecessarily hard during normal driving. It can be particularly relevant to Transit Customs that cover regular delivery routes, motorway mileage or repeated journeys with a predictable load.
The calibration is designed around how the driver actually uses the van. A local trade vehicle working around South Wales has a different duty cycle from a lightly loaded van spending most of its time on long motorway journeys. Understanding that use is more valuable than applying the same economy-labelled file to both.
DPF delete software for SID212 Transit Customs
Current access also allows us to provide DPF delete software on supported post-2020 Ford Transit Custom applications. The work addresses the relevant DPF monitoring, regeneration and associated diagnostic strategies inside the ECU calibration.
Because the SID212 manages these functions alongside torque, airflow, injection and temperature control, the DPF changes should be treated as part of the complete engine strategy. We build the requested solution as a coordinated calibration rather than stacking an unrelated DPF file on top of a separate remap.
AdBlue delete software for later Ford Transits
We can now offer AdBlue delete software for supported SID212 and SID212 EVO Transit Custom models. This targets the ECU strategies associated with the SCR and AdBlue system, including the related monitoring, warnings and torque restrictions.
The correct solution depends on the exact software version and fault condition presented by the vehicle. Reading the ECU identity and diagnostic state first allows the calibration to be built for the actual van rather than selected from a model name alone.
EGR delete software
EGR delete software is also available within the new post-2020 Transit Custom coverage. The relevant EGR command, airflow and diagnostic strategies can be calibrated as part of the same SID212 or SID212 EVO software package.
When EGR work is combined with performance, economy, DPF or AdBlue changes, we consider the interactions across the full calibration. That produces a cleaner, more coherent result than treating each request as an isolated switch.
One calibration built around the whole van
A Transit Custom may arrive for one service and need a combination of changes. A tradesperson might want stronger loaded performance and improved everyday response. A fleet operator may prioritise predictable torque and economy. Another vehicle may require DPF, AdBlue or EGR software alongside the tuning work.
Those requests all meet inside the same ECU. The torque model affects boost, fuelling and gearbox requests. Air-path changes interact with EGR control. Temperature and regeneration strategies interact with the DPF system. Diagnostic decisions can affect torque availability. Treating the ECU as one connected control system allows us to build one considered calibration around the required outcome.
