Power loss on a hill, during acceleration or when the engine is warm needs a clear description and useful measurements. Limp mode describes restricted vehicle behaviour; it does not identify the component that caused it.

Record the conditions that bring the fault on

Tell us whether the engine is cold or warm, the approximate speed and engine load, and which warnings appear. Does it hesitate, misfire, stop pulling suddenly or run normally again after restarting? Include whether the problem happens on a standard vehicle or started after modifications or repairs.

Those details help reproduce the complaint appropriately and choose data to record. A scan taken while the engine is idling normally may miss the behaviour you feel under load.

Keep the scan and look at related faults together

A stored code records a condition detected by a control unit. Its description, supporting data and other faults matter. Some symptoms lead towards boost control, others towards fuelling, misfire or another engine concern. We compare those possibilities against the observed behaviour before choosing a repair.

For example, Ross-Tech's P0299 guidance describes reduced power and limp mode with several possible boost-system causes. That is one code-specific example, rather than an explanation for every vehicle that loses power.

Select tests that answer the next question

Depending on the vehicle and evidence, live data may help compare boost request and measured boost, fuel-pressure behaviour or engine misfire information. Pico measurements can investigate relevant control signals. Mechanical or emissions evidence may be needed if the running complaint points in that direction.

There is no need to replace a turbo, injector or sensor just because its name appears in a fault description. A useful diagnostic plan explains what the next test is intended to establish and what access or observation time it requires.

Choose the relevant route into the workshop

Bring the history as well as the symptoms

Include earlier scans, invoices, test results and details of modifications. Garage referrals with logs should state what was measured and under which conditions. Our engine diagnostics hub explains how assessment, an agreed investigation and repair advice fit together.

Engine fault diagnosis at our Llandow workshop

Llandow Tuning welcomes vehicle owners and garage referrals for engine running faults. Our workshop is in Llandow, near Cowbridge and Llantwit Major, with customers from Barry, Bridgend and across South Wales for difficult faults.

Start with a free code scan and initial assessment: we review the symptoms, read stored codes where communication is possible, and provide a printout and advice. Further diagnostic time, dismantling, parts and repairs follow an agreed plan and are separate from that free starting point.

Bring the registration, mileage, scan results, symptoms, previous repairs and any modifications. Garages should include their measurements and test conditions. Contact the workshop, call 01446 355001 or send us a WhatsApp message. Contact us before arranging delivery of a non-running vehicle.
