Engine swaps and conversions in South Wales

Engine, electronics and drivetrain

Make the whole conversion work together

From a BMW M57 or N57 diesel to a Rover V8 or a classic performance build, an engine swap involves much more than fitting an engine. We can discuss the mechanical installation, wiring, immobiliser and gearbox integration as one project.

Bring us your idea, a part-finished conversion or a vehicle that will not start or communicate after a swap. We assess each project before agreeing the work.

Popular engine swaps and donor vehicles

These are examples of engines and vehicles often discussed in conversion projects. Donor specifications and engine codes vary by model year and market: a listed combination is not a promise of fitment or an off-the-shelf conversion.

BMW M57 diesel swap

Engine: 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel, including M57, M57N and M57N2 variants.

Example donors: BMW E46 330d, E60 530d and E53 X5 3.0d; some E90 330d and 335d models. Check the engine code and year.

Popular projects: Land Rover Defender and Discovery, Range Rover Classic, Nissan Patrol and Toyota Land Cruiser.

BMW N57 diesel swap

Engine: 3.0-litre six-cylinder turbo diesel; single- and multi-turbo versions differ.

Example donors: selected BMW 330d, 530d and X5 30d models, including F30/F10 applications. Check the exact engine and ECU.

Popular projects: Land Rover Defender and other 4x4 conversion projects, often with a matching automatic gearbox.

Rover V8 swap

Engine: Rover V8, including 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6-litre variants.

Example donors: selected Range Rover Classic, P38, Discovery, Rover SD1 and TVR models, depending on variant.

Popular projects: Land Rover Series and Defender, MGB, classic British sports cars, hot rods and kit cars.

GM LS V8 swap

Engine: GM LS-family V8, including LS1, LS2 and LS3 variants.

Example donors: selected Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro models, or a suitable crate engine.

Popular projects: Land Rover Defender, BMW E36, Mazda MX-5, Nissan S-chassis and classic cars. Substantial supporting work can be needed.

Honda K-series swap

Engine: K20 and K24 four-cylinder petrol engines.

Example donors: selected Honda Civic Type R, Accord and CR-V models; verify the engine code.

Popular projects: Honda Civic and Integra, Mazda MX-5 and Lotus Elise conversions.

VW / Audi 1.8T swap

Engine: Volkswagen Group 1.8-litre turbo petrol, with several engine codes and configurations.

Example donors: selected Mk4 Golf GTI, Audi A3, TT and related models.

Popular projects: earlier VW Golf models, classic VW projects and suitable kit cars.

Mercedes OM606 diesel swap

Engine: 3.0-litre six-cylinder diesel, in naturally aspirated and turbocharged variants.

Example donors: selected Mercedes E-Class diesel models, including W124 and W210 applications.

Popular projects: Mercedes G-Class, Land Rover and other 4x4 builds, with compatibility assessed individually.

Ford Zetec and Duratec swaps

Engine: selected Ford Zetec or Duratec four-cylinder petrol engines.

Example donors: selected Ford Focus and Mondeo models; exact engine family and configuration matter.

Popular projects: classic Ford Escort, kit cars and other rear-wheel-drive classics.

Have a different engine? We can discuss other petrol or diesel conversions and part-finished projects. Send the donor engine code, ECU and gearbox details before buying parts.

Vehicles people convert

Projects range from working 4x4s to weekend classics and track cars. We assess available space, intended use, drivetrain, brakes and vehicle condition before confirming whether we can take on the build.

Land Rover and 4x4

Defender 90, 110 and 130; Series vehicles, Discovery and Range Rover Classic, as well as selected Patrol and Land Cruiser projects.

Classic and sports cars

Classic Ford Escort, MGB, Mazda MX-5, older BMWs and other vehicles where packaging and supporting systems need careful planning.

Kit, track and custom builds

Kit cars and modified projects with a clear specification for drivetrain, intended road or track use and the work needed to finish them.

Engine swap services

Choose the support you need: planning a complete conversion, helping integrate an existing installation, or diagnosing a part-finished build. Availability is confirmed for the specific project.

ECU, wiring and immobiliser integration

We can assess and adapt engine wiring, power supplies and relevant vehicle signals, and configure or code supported engine and vehicle modules. Where the system supports it, we can work with the donor or recipient immobiliser, keys and modules to establish authorised starting in the new vehicle.

BMW EWS or CAS, CAN communication, instrument signals and other systems vary by generation. Bring all available keys, ECUs, modules and donor details; the solution depends on the exact hardware and software.

Planning and installation

Assess the donor engine and recipient, mounting and clearances, cooling, intake, exhaust and fuel-system requirements. Fabrication and specialist work are agreed to suit the build.

Wiring and starting

Discuss loom modifications, ECU power and communication, immobiliser pairing and troubleshooting a conversion that will not start or run correctly.

Calibration and checks

Once the installation is ready and safe, discuss appropriate configuration, diagnostics, data logging and calibration. Dyno work is subject to suitability and agreed separately.

Gearbox and drivetrain adaptation

Matching the engine to the transmission

Keep the existing gearbox, use the donor transmission or explore another manual or automatic option. We can assess adapter plates, bellhousing, flywheel and clutch or torque-converter compatibility, mounts, propshafts and transfer-case interfaces.

Automatic swaps may also need gearbox control, shifter, wiring and CAN integration. For example, an M57 and Land Rover R380 or a BMW automatic and a 4x4 transfer case require the right parts for the exact versions. Torque capacity, ratios and drivetrain condition matter.

Planning, costs and road use

Agree the scope

Every build is different. Parts, fabrication, wiring, donor condition and unexpected faults affect cost and time. We discuss an initial assessment and quote the agreed stages.

Bring the details

Send the recipient registration, donor model and engine code, ECU and gearbox numbers, keys, photos, existing parts, budget and intended use. Tell us if the project is already dismantled.

Plan for road use

Registration, insurance, emissions, MOT and possible approval requirements depend on the conversion. Tell your insurer and check the requirements before work begins.

Changes to V5C details such as engine number, capacity or fuel type must be reported to DVLA and supporting evidence may be required. More extensive alterations can have additional approval implications. See DVLA evidence guidance, vehicle approval and the MOT emissions guidance.

Engine swap questions

Can you fit a BMW M57 or N57 into a Defender?

These are established conversion ideas. The right engine, ECU, wiring, mounts and gearbox depend on the Defender and donor. Send the registration and donor details for an assessment.

Can you adapt the immobiliser after an engine swap?

We can assess supported immobiliser, key, ECU and module integration for the specific project. Bring the donor and recipient components and keys where available; we confirm what is possible after checking the system.

Can I keep my original gearbox?

Sometimes, with compatible components or suitable adapters. Flywheel, clutch, starter, mounting, torque capacity and, on 4x4s, the transfer case must be considered before deciding.

Can you finish or diagnose a part-finished engine conversion?

We can discuss part-finished builds and non-starting conversions. Send photos, the work already done, wiring information and a complete parts list so we can assess the scope.

How much does an engine swap cost?

There is no single price. The donor, parts, vehicle condition, fabrication, electronics and transmission requirements all affect the quote. We agree assessment and subsequent stages before proceeding.

Tell us about your conversion

Send your vehicle and donor details, intended gearbox, photos and the work you need. We will discuss suitability, the next step and a project-specific quote.
