ECU testing and diagnostics in South Wales

Establish whether the ECU is the problem

A suspected engine control unit fault needs investigation before a replacement is ordered. Llandow Tuning offers ECU fault analysis and bench testing, with the approach chosen for the vehicle, control unit and symptoms.

Which problems can we investigate?

Contact us about loss of communication with the engine ECU, a suspected internal fault, problems following a software update, or a control unit that needs checking as part of a repair or custom build. We work with several platforms, including VAG, Ford and BMW; compatibility must be checked for the exact unit.

A fault code or communication error alone does not establish that the ECU has failed. The vehicle's power supply, wiring and connected components may need checking as part of the diagnosis. If the cause is unclear, our vehicle fault assessment is a useful starting point.

Vehicle testing or bench testing?

Testing on the vehicle lets us consider the ECU alongside the systems it controls. Bench testing isolates the unit for suitable checks and, where supported, simulation of vehicle conditions. The available tests depend on the ECU hardware and software.

A unit that passes an isolated test can still have a problem that appears only in particular vehicle conditions. Share any logs, earlier test results and the circumstances of the failure so that we can discuss the limits of the proposed test.

Repair, replacement and programming

Following investigation, the next step may be a wiring repair, further testing, ECU repair or a compatible replacement. Replacement modules can also require coding and programming. Testing does not automatically include these separate jobs.

What determines the cost?

The ECU type, vehicle access, the fault being investigated and any recovery or programming work all affect the scope. Contact us before removing or sending a unit so we can confirm what information and components are needed.

Preparing your enquiry

Send the vehicle registration, ECU part number or a clear label photograph, fault codes and details of previous repairs or programming attempts. Tell us whether the vehicle starts and whether diagnostic equipment can communicate with it.
