Engines and Engine Rebuilding

Engines & Engine Rebuilds

At Llandow Tuning, we deal with everything from straightforward engine swaps to full custom engine builds. Whether your existing engine has failed or you’re planning an upgrade, we can advise on the most sensible and cost-effective route.

We can supply and fit replacement engines for many vehicles from leading engine rebuild centres and trusted suppliers.

We can also rebuild engines in-house, although this is limited to certain engine types and applications. Each enquiry is assessed on a case-by-case basis, taking into account parts availability, machining needs, and the intended use of the vehicle.

Where we rebuild an engine, we use high-quality parts and components to ensure reliability and performance. Assembly typically takes place in-house, and we work with specialist machine shops and other industry leaders for any required machining services such as boring, honing, crank grinding, balancing, or head work.

How much is it going to cost?

Every engine job is different. The overall cost will depend on the type of engine, parts availability, level of machining required, and how quickly you need the vehicle back. To give you more control, we offer three labour-rate options: Priority, Standard and Economy.

Priority Service

Need your car back fast? Our Priority Engine Replacement service ensures your vehicle receives immediate attention from our most experienced technicians.

Your car will be placed ahead of routine work wherever possible. We cannot guarantee parts availability or supplier timescales, but we will do our utmost to get your vehicle back to you as quickly as possible.

Where needed, we can use our own drivers to deliver parts to external machine shops to speed up the process (additional charges apply). In many cases it may also be quicker to use a quality reconditioned engine from one of our trusted suppliers — please ask us for details and options.

  • £95 per hour
  • Top workshop priority
  • Fixed price options available on some jobs
  • 50% deposit payable in advance

Standard Service

Our most common choice, offering excellent value. Your vehicle is scheduled as part of our regular workflow with the same attention to detail and quality we apply to all jobs.

If we have to wait for a part, the work will be paused and then resumed once the required items arrive and current jobs are completed. This option suits most customers who want a sensible balance between cost and speed.

  • £75 per hour
  • Standard workshop priority
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Ideal for daily drivers and general repairs

Economy Service

Our most cost-effective option — perfect if you’re not in a rush and want the same high-quality workmanship at a lower hourly rate.

Timescales for this service can range from 6 months to over a year, depending on workload, project type, third-party machining, and parts availability. Economy jobs are fitted in around our regular schedule, so they cannot be treated as urgent.

If you have a "dream project" and want to keep costs down, this can be an ideal option, but please remember it operates strictly on an as-and-when basis and is not suitable if you need the car back quickly.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss whether the Economy Service is right for you, please contact us.

The bottom line: we can reduce costs by working on your vehicle during quieter periods, but we will not prioritise an Economy job over customers paying higher labour rates or urgent work.

  • £55 per hour
  • As-and-when workshop priority
  • Lowest overall cost
  • Subject to availability

What sort of upgrades can we do?

At Llandow Tuning, we can carry out a wide range of engine upgrades aimed at improving performance, reliability, or both. Typical work can include:

  • Performance camshaft installation and timing setup
  • Upgraded pistons, rods, bearings and fasteners
  • Cylinder head work — valve upgrades, springs, guides and light porting
  • Head gasket and head stud upgrades for higher boost applications
  • Balancing and blueprinting of rotating assemblies
  • Oil system and cooling system improvements where appropriate

Many of these upgrades are best combined with a proper ECU calibration on our dyno to ensure everything works together safely and efficiently.

If you have something specific in mind, just send us a message with your vehicle details and your goals (road, track, drag, etc.) and we’ll be happy to discuss options and pricing.

Engine Upgrades in Wales

Can we forge your engine?

Yes, we can forge your engine. However, before committing to this kind of work it is important to understand the costs, timescales and whether it is genuinely necessary for your goals.

A properly forged build will usually include forged pistons, stronger connecting rods, upgraded bearings, head studs/bolts, gaskets and often additional machining and balancing. Done properly, this is not a cheap exercise: as a guide, the minimum price for a basic 4-cylinder engine build is typically around £4,000, and larger or more complex engines will cost more.

For many customers, a well-set-up standard or lightly uprated engine with a sensible power level and a good custom tune is a better use of budget. For higher power targets, regular track use or serious long-term projects, a forged build may well be the right answer.

If you’re considering forging your engine, please get in touch with full vehicle details and your intended power/usage targets, and we’ll happily talk you through the realistic options and costs.

Warranty

Engine Swaps

When we supply and fit a reconditioned engine, you’ll receive the same warranty that our engine supplier provides. For most road-going or non-performance vehicles, this is typically a 3 or 6-month warranty, depending on the supplier and engine type.

If we supply and fit a used (second-hand) engine, we provide a limited 2-week start-up warranty for road or non-performance vehicles. This covers the engine starting, idling, and running as expected upon installation.

If you choose to supply your own engine, the responsibility for any warranty or failure rests entirely with you or your supplier. We cannot provide any warranty or guarantee on parts not sourced by us.

Engine Rebuilds

For road or non-performance engine rebuilds completed in-house, we provide a 3-month warranty on workmanship only. This means that if a fault is proven to be due to an assembly or workmanship issue, we’ll put it right.

The warranty does not cover any damage or failure resulting from:

  • Misuse, neglect, or over-revving
  • Incorrect installation or tuning by third parties
  • Use of poor-quality or contaminated oil or fuel
  • Cooling or lubrication issues external to the engine
  • Modifications or mapping changes made after the rebuild without our approval

For fast road, track, or motorsport applications, warranty coverage may be reduced or excluded entirely due to the nature of use and higher risk of component stress. We will always discuss this openly before work begins, so you know exactly where you stand.

If you supply any of the rebuild parts yourself, the warranty only covers workmanship and assembly issues. If we fit something wrong, we'll happily fix it but not the part itself.

Please contact us before committing to any rebuild for a full explanation of warranty terms specific to your engine and its intended purpose.
