If fresh plugs or coils have not solved a misfire, the next useful step is to establish what is failing and when. A cylinder misfire code records a detected running problem; it does not prove that another ignition component will fix it.
What changed after the repair?
Tell the workshop whether the fault stayed exactly the same, improved briefly, moved to another cylinder or appeared under different conditions. A cold-start fault, uneven hot idle and hesitation under load can need different observations. That repair history helps decide which measurements are useful next.
Keep the earlier scan and freeze-frame information if available. Clearing codes before an assessment can remove useful context, and a warning light returning does not necessarily mean the same fault has returned.
Ignition needs checking as a system
On a petrol engine, plug condition and specification, coil operation, connections and insulation all matter. A new component can be unsuitable, incorrectly fitted or affected by a problem elsewhere. NGK's ignition guidance explains why the coil, boot and plug should be considered together.
A controlled comparison can help test a suspicion, but the result still needs to be checked against the vehicle's symptoms. Replacing every ignition part gives less information than recording how the fault responds to a specific test.
Fuelling, air and mechanical condition can also matter
When ignition evidence does not explain the fault, the investigation may need to look at mixture, fuel supply, injector behaviour or an air leak. A cylinder can also misfire because of a compression or valve-related concern. These are possible directions for testing, rather than a diagnosis made from the symptom alone.
At Llandow Tuning, live data and Pico measurements can help examine engine behaviour and control signals. Where appropriate, in-cylinder pressure analysis helps investigate mechanical running behaviour. The test plan follows the evidence and the access needed on that engine.
Does the injector need testing?
A suspected injector fault is normally investigated on the vehicle first. If removal and bench testing would answer a useful question, we discuss compatibility, the tests available and the separate work involved. See injector fault diagnostics and the limits of GDI injector testing.
Book the investigation that matches the symptom
Our misfire diagnostics service covers rough running, cold-start faults and problems continuing after previous repairs. For wider hesitation or poor-power concerns, see engine diagnostics and fault finding.
Engine fault diagnosis at our Llandow workshop
Llandow Tuning welcomes vehicle owners and garage referrals for engine running faults. Our workshop is in Llandow, near Cowbridge and Llantwit Major, with customers from Barry, Bridgend and across South Wales for difficult faults.
Start with a free code scan and initial assessment: we review the symptoms, read stored codes where communication is possible, and provide a printout and advice. Further diagnostic time, dismantling, parts and repairs follow an agreed plan and are separate from that free starting point.
Bring the registration, mileage, scan results, symptoms, previous repairs and any modifications. Garages should include their measurements and test conditions. Contact the workshop, call 01446 355001 or send us a WhatsApp message. Contact us before arranging delivery of a non-running vehicle.
