Gearbox Servicing & Automatic Gearbox Rebuilds

Transmission servicing and repairs in South Wales

Keep your transmission maintained with gearbox servicing at Llandow Tuning, near Cowbridge and Llantwit Major. We cover DSG, DCT and conventional automatic gearbox oil changes, diagnostics and repair or rebuild options for supported transmissions.

Our workshop beside Llandow Race Track supports VAG, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and other premium and performance vehicles. We identify the gearbox fitted, review its history and select the correct fluid, filter and procedure. Manual gearbox and differential oil servicing can also be discussed for your vehicle.

If the vehicle is slipping, shuddering, shifting harshly or displaying a transmission warning, describe the fault when booking. An oil change is not a diagnosis, and some vehicles need assessment before routine servicing is appropriate.

Gearbox and drivetrain servicing at Llandow Tuning

A service matched to the system fitted

DSG and DCT gearboxes

The gearbox code determines the applicable maintenance procedure, fluid and filter requirements. DSG or DCT describes a family of transmissions, so the same job and interval do not apply to every version.

Send your registration, mileage and service history. Include any previous clutch, mechatronic or gearbox work so that the starting condition is understood.

Haldex and BMW xDrive servicing

Four-wheel-drive systems have separate service requirements. Our Haldex servicing covers coupling oil changes, diagnostics and repair options for the fitted generation. BMW xDrive servicing covers the applicable transfer case or AWD coupling and related faults.

Tell us about AWD warnings, unusual behaviour and previous drivetrain work. Coupling, transfer-case and differential fluids are separate from the gearbox oil and must be quoted for the correct units.

Differentials

Differential work includes fluid changes, assessment of leaks and discussion of sealing repairs. The correct specification depends on the unit, including whether a limited-slip system is fitted.

For motorsport or modified vehicles, include details of the differential and intended use. Existing mechanical noise or wear may require repair beyond a fluid change.

ZF automatic gearbox servicing and repairs

We can discuss maintenance, diagnostics and repair options for ZF automatic transmissions, including 6HP and 8HP applications. Confirm the exact unit before selecting parts or planning the work.

Fluid and filter service

The oil specification, filter or sump arrangement and filling procedure need to match the gearbox. We will discuss the applicable service and parts for your vehicle.

Diagnostics and adaptations

We can assess gearbox faults and discuss adaptation resets or relearning where appropriate. These procedures depend on the diagnosis and the work performed.

Automatic gearbox rebuild options

Depending on the diagnosis and unit, options may include a targeted repair, a gearbox rebuild or a sourced rebuilt replacement. The proposed work and parts are agreed after the transmission has been assessed.

Automatic gearbox rebuilds and transmission repairs

A slipping automatic, delayed drive engagement or repeated transmission warning needs a diagnosis before deciding on a rebuild. We assess the fault, identify the gearbox and explain whether servicing, a component repair, a rebuild or a replacement unit is the appropriate route.

Rebuild enquiries can involve worn clutch packs, bearings, seals, hydraulic control components or torque-converter problems. DSG and DCT faults may instead involve the clutch assembly or mechatronics. Symptoms alone do not establish which part has failed, and an oil change cannot repair damaged internal components.

The work may require removal and strip-down before the full scope can be confirmed. We will explain any specialist rebuild work or sourced rebuilt unit, the parts included, expected turnaround and applicable warranty terms in the quote. Availability depends on the exact transmission and the damage found.

What helps us assess your gearbox?

  • Registration, make, model, mileage and gearbox code if known.
  • Whether the problem happens cold, hot, under load or while changing direction.
  • Warning messages, fault codes and any loss of drive.
  • Previous oil changes, repairs, tuning or gearbox replacement.

If drive is unreliable, the gearbox is overheating or there is a substantial leak, contact us about assessment and transport before making the journey.

Common gearbox problems we investigate

Harsh or delayed gear changes

A jolt during a shift, hesitation selecting drive or an inconsistent change can have fluid, hydraulic, control or mechanical causes. We check the fault history and operating conditions before recommending a repair.

Slipping, shudder or loss of drive

Revs rising without matching acceleration, judder under load or loss of forward or reverse drive need investigation. The gearbox, torque converter, clutches and the rest of the drivetrain may need to be considered.

Leaks, noises and warning messages

Fluid loss, new whining noises, overheating or gearbox warnings can point to different faults. Diagnostics, inspection and appropriate testing help distinguish a service requirement from damage that needs repair.

For vibration or binding associated with four-wheel drive, see our separate Haldex diagnostics and repairs and BMW xDrive diagnostics and repairs.

When should gearbox oil be changed?

Start with the service information for the actual vehicle and transmission. Mileage, age, use and previous maintenance help determine the work required; there is no single interval suitable for every automatic, DSG or AWD system.

Correct fluid and level-setting matter as much as the change itself. ZF's oil-change guidance specifies the appropriate oil and procedure, including temperature-dependent level checks.

Bring any invoices showing earlier fluid, sump or filter changes. If the history is unknown, say so when enquiring so we can discuss an assessment.

Maintenance, fault repair and gearbox tuning

Routine servicing supports maintenance; it cannot guarantee a cure for slipping clutches, worn bearings or other mechanical damage. A reset also cannot repair a worn component.

Gearbox tuning changes calibration on supported units and should be considered separately from maintenance. We can discuss shift behaviour and suitable options once the transmission and vehicle requirements are understood.

For a conversion or performance build, provide the gearbox code, engine output information and existing modifications. Compatibility cannot be established from a gearbox family's name or a generic torque figure alone.

What happens at a servicing appointment?

  1. Identify the drivetrain: confirm the units fitted and review the service history and any symptoms.
  2. Agree the scope: distinguish routine fluid and filter work from diagnostics or repairs, and identify the required parts.
  3. Carry out the specified work: follow the applicable procedure for the fluid service, including level setting and checks.
  4. Discuss findings: explain any issues discovered and the next maintenance or repair steps.
