Swansea University Race Engineering (SURE)
Swansea University Race Engineering turns classroom knowledge into a running competition car. Llandow Tuning supports that process with the diagnostic, wiring and ECU experience needed when designs meet real hardware.
The programme
Swansea University Race Engineering (SURE) is the university's student-led Formula Student team. Students design, manufacture, test and compete with a formula-style car, gaining practical experience across every system on the vehicle.
The story begins with SR-01 at Formula Student UK in 2001 and continues through competition in the UK and Europe to the current SR-26 programme. Each generation inherits the lessons of the cars before it and adds its own engineering work.
Llandow Tuning supports that process with workshop experience in diagnostics, motorsport wiring, ECU configuration, calibration and data-led fault finding. We help the team move from a symptom to a test, and from a test to a useful engineering decision.
The students own the design. Our role is to help turn testing, data and workshop experience into confident engineering decisions.
Workshop-to-track support
The work sits where electrical design, engine behaviour and track reliability meet.
Structured testing helps the team separate wiring, sensor, mechanical and calibration faults instead of relying on guesswork.
Harness routing, termination, grounding, power distribution and sensor integration are reviewed as one vehicle system.
Support covers ECU configuration, first-start strategy and calibration decisions suited to a student-built competition car.
Logging and controlled testing are used to improve driveability, reliability and the quality of the team's engineering feedback loop.
Llandow Tuning brings experience across both ECU families, while SURE's engine-management history includes the DTA S60 Pro, S80 Pro and current T8+ generation.
Development in action
Testing brings the whole car together. Sensor behaviour, wiring integrity, ECU configuration and driver feedback all have to agree before the team can move forward with confidence.
Engine management
SURE cars have used successive generations of DTAFast engine management. Llandow Tuning adds practical setup and calibration experience across both DTAFast and Haltech systems, helping the team connect ECU decisions with the behaviour of the complete car.
Alongside DTAFast development, our Haltech experience gives the team access to a broader engine-management knowledge base.
The current programme
The 2026 car continues more than two decades of student-led Formula Student engineering. Current work includes wiring-loom development and DTAFast T8+ validation as the team prepares the next chapter of its competition story.

Competition highlights
Across Formula Student events in the UK and Europe, generations of SURE students have delivered class victories, efficiency awards, endurance success and a growing body of practical race-engineering experience.
2003
An early Formula Student win that helped establish Swansea's student race-engineering programme.

A major competitive milestone as the team moved into the top level of Formula Student competition.
2006—07
First place for Fuel Efficiency across Formula Student events in the UK and Germany.
2008—09
A Class 1 runner-up finish in 2008 followed by third place in Endurance in 2009.
2025
The team passed scrutineering and completed the Formula Student UK endurance event.
Competition history
From SR-01 to the current SR-26 programme, SURE has taken its student-built cars to Formula Student events in the UK, Germany, Hungary and Italy.
The current car brings together a new wiring loom and DTAFast T8+ engine management as development continues.

A two-event European programme took SURE to competition in both the UK and Italy.
SR-21 continued Swansea's Formula Student programme at the UK event.
SR-19 represented the next generation of Swansea student engineers at Formula Student UK.
The SR-17 programme continued the team's regular Formula Student UK competition activity.
SR-16 combined the team's developing chassis package with DTA S80 engine management.
Another complete design, build and competition cycle for the student team.
SURE competed in the UK and Hungary and achieved second place in Costing.
The SR-12 programme used a DTA S80 Pro ECU as the team's engine-management development continued.
SR-11 introduced a documented DTA S60 Pro installation to the programme.
The team achieved third place in the Endurance event.
SURE finished as Class 1 runner-up.
A second consecutive first place in Fuel Efficiency.
First place in Fuel Efficiency as the programme expanded into European competition.
SURE secured a Class 1 (200) victory.
SR-04 continued the team's early run of student-designed Formula Student cars.
SURE achieved a Class 3 victory.
The second Swansea car built on the experience gained from the inaugural programme.
