George Russell's Belgian Grand Prix ended on the opening lap, allowing Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli to stretch his championship advantage over the Briton to 50 points.

Russell was eliminated after contact with Lewis Hamilton, who received a five-second penalty for the collision. At the front, Antonelli converted pole into his sixth Grand Prix win of the season, although the route to victory required two separate recoveries.

Max Verstappen briefly got ahead leaving La Source before Antonelli reclaimed the lead on the approach to Les Combes. Charles Leclerc then gained track position by stopping during a short Virtual Safety Car period.

Antonelli caught and passed the Ferrari with ten laps remaining to secure the 44-lap race. It was his first victory since Monaco, following two non-scores caused by car problems in the preceding three rounds. Spa consequently brought a substantial swing between Mercedes' title contenders.
