For example, REVO lists a particular car as achieving "315ps to 330ps" at stage 2. This raises an important question: if there is such a significant range in performance among supposedly identical cars, why use the same tuning software for all of them?

If an off-the-shelf solution doesn't account for the car's specific condition or the customer's preferences, why is there such a wide range of performance? They often suggest factors like weather or fuel quality are responsible. Do they include a special fuel sensor, or are they relying on the knock sensor to retard the ignition when it detects knocking? While this might sound like a reasonable explanation, it ultimately makes the tuning map seem less reliable. If fuel quality significantly impacts the gains obtained with an off-the-shelf map, it implies potential engine knocking.

I suspect the truth is these maps don't actually cause knocking; they simply don't reach the upper end of the projected gains. The explanations about fuel or weather conditions might just be convenient excuses.
