Ford Ranger: investigation of engine and gearbox tuning.
The owner reported recurring shift problems after a mobile engine and gearbox tune in 2022. The supplied files included an encrypted version and a VBF for the wrong software version, so they could not serve as the original calibration.
Our inspection found incomplete EGR changes, disabled DPF faults while the filter remained fitted, removed back-pressure torque reduction and deleted torque limiters. We suspected those torque changes were contributing to the shift problem. We found little evidence of substantive gearbox changes beyond a software update.
OBD reads failed with Flex, Kess3, AT, CMD FlashTec and HP Tuners. We accessed the ECU in boot mode and worked from its installed software version. After correcting the calibration, the vehicle drove more smoothly.
