George Russell will take a five-place grid penalty for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix after Mercedes fitted a sixth internal combustion engine to his car.
The FIA stewards confirmed the penalty on 6 November, citing the power-unit allocation rules. It applies to the next race in which Russell participates, meaning his starting place for Sunday will be affected by his qualifying result and any other applicable grid penalties.
Russell said Mercedes had expected to need another penalty before the end of the season and had chosen Interlagos as the place to take it. He had previously received a power-unit penalty at the Singapore Grand Prix.
In Friday afternoon practice on 6 November, Russell was fourth quickest behind team-mate Kimi Antonelli, McLaren driver Lando Norris and Red Bull driver Max Verstappen. The FIA timing sheet recorded Russell 0.273 seconds behind Antonelli.
