Former British Formula Renault champion and endurance racer Danny Watts has described the depression, anxiety and alcohol addiction he experienced after retiring from competition. In a Motorsport UK feature published on 29 October, Watts said that leaving the structure and travel of team life left him feeling isolated after his final race at Le Mans in 2017.
Watts said he sought treatment, later completed an Open University degree in psychology with counselling, and now leads the BRDC Mental Health and Wellness Project. His account focuses on the transition out of a racing career and the value of recognising when support is needed; he also said he has been sober for more than five years.
