A fine mist. A cooler intake charge.

A turbocharger heats air as it compresses it. An intercooler removes much of that heat; water/methanol injection can provide another stage of cooling. A nozzle sprays tiny droplets into the intake, where evaporation absorbs heat from the air heading towards the cylinders.

Water provides cooling and methanol also contributes fuel. The benefits and tuning approach depend on the fuel type, induction system and existing temperature limits. We identify the engine's requirements before choosing the installation.

How intake cooling can help

Additional charge cooling

Evaporation removes heat from the intake charge. The useful amount depends on the engine, airflow and existing cooling system.

Tuning for the fuel type

Petrol and diesel engines use different combustion and tuning strategies. We confirm the engine before assessing how it can use the cooling and additional fuel.

Measure the result

Baseline logging and repeat dyno runs establish the benefit, with attention to fuelling, temperatures and mechanical limits.

Choosing the setup for your Citroën C5X

We identify the fuel type, induction system and existing cooling before choosing a kit. Petrol engines can benefit from greater knock resistance; diesel assessment centres on fuelling and combustion under load. Naturally aspirated engines need their own assessment rather than boost-based settings.

Cooling that follows engine load

  1. Below the start pointNo spray is commanded. The engine runs on its normal cooling and fuelling.
  2. As boost risesA progressive controller increases delivery between its start and full-delivery settings.
  3. At the full-delivery pointThe selected nozzle and system provide the configured delivery. The settings are established during setup and testing.

The controller's pressure range is a specification, not a recommendation to run that boost on your engine. Higher-pressure or different load signals may need another controller option.

A long history in boosted engines

Water injection was being studied in aircraft engines decades before today's performance-car installations. Intercooling has early aviation roots too: the two approaches developed alongside each other and can still work together.

  1. Aircraft intercoolers

    NACA compared three intercooler designs for cooling compressed intake air.

  2. Water injection research

    NACA investigated intake-air cooling from water injection and its ability to suppress knock in spark-ignition engines.

  3. BMW M4 GTS

    BMW used factory water injection to add cooling beyond the intercooler's contribution. Its water-only system illustrates the shared principle, rather than an AEM fitment.

Before choosing a system

Does it replace an intercooler?

Usually it supplements the existing charge cooling. An intercooler transfers heat through a heat exchanger; injection absorbs heat as droplets evaporate. We assess the intercooler and intake first so the kit addresses a real need.

How much extra power will it make?

There is no reliable fixed percentage from fitting a kit. The fuel, engine, current map, intake temperatures and mechanical limits all matter. We establish a baseline, calibrate the system and compare repeat dyno runs to measure the gain on your car.

What happens if the fluid runs out?

A tune that relies on injection needs a tested response if delivery stops, such as reducing boost or returning to suitable engine settings. AEM's Boost Safe output can report low fluid and electrical faults; it does not directly measure spray flow. Where the tune depends on delivery, suitable flow monitoring is part of the installation.

Which fluid does it use, and what needs maintaining?

Use the mixture specified for the kit and tune. AEM recommends no more than 50% methanol. Keep the mixture consistent, check the reservoir, and maintain the filter, nozzle, hoses and pump. Methanol is toxic and flammable, so use suitable premixed fluid and follow its handling instructions.

Can too much injection cause problems?

Yes. Excess delivery can disrupt combustion, and unwanted liquid entering a stopped engine can cause damage. Nozzle sizing, secure plumbing, anti-siphon provisions where required and fault protection are part of proper installation. More fluid is not a substitute for measured setup.
