Max Verstappen and Liam Lawson have each received a one-place grid penalty for the Mexico City Grand Prix after making contact during second practice on Friday.

Formula 1 reported that the stewards reviewed video and data and heard from both drivers before issuing the penalties. Each also received a penalty point.

The incident followed a move by Verstappen on Lawson into Turn 12. As Lawson tried to regain the place through the stadium section, Verstappen crossed the kerb and rejoined alongside the Racing Bulls car. Contact damaged the Red Bull floor and the front wing of the Racing Bulls, and the session was stopped while debris was cleared.

According to the stewards, whose decision was quoted by Formula 1, Verstappen was preparing for a lap and Lawson was on a cool-down lap. Both drivers resumed practice after the stoppage; Verstappen ended the session fifth and Lawson ninth.
