The FIA and Formula One Management have agreed a ten-year partnership to bring a Formula 1 African Grand Prix to Rwanda, with the first race expected in the early 2030s.
The FIA says the event will follow completion of a purpose-built circuit at Bugesera, about 40 kilometres south of Kigali and beside the new Kigali International Airport. The proposed venue is to be developed to FIA Grade 1 standards as part of a wider project led by the Rwanda Development Board.
The announcement sets no inaugural race date or construction milestones. It would mark Formula 1’s return to the African continent for the first time since 1993, subject to the circuit project being completed.
