Lando Norris finished third at Formula 1's first Madring Grand Prix after a Virtual Safety Car transformed a race he had looked capable of winning.
The McLaren driver qualified on pole by 0.011 seconds and led confidently in the opening stint. However, he had passed the pit entrance when the caution arrived, while Kimi Antonelli was able to stop at reduced time loss.
Norris pitted on the following lap after racing resumed. A seven-second stop compounded the setback and dropped him to fifth before he recovered a podium position.
Antonelli took his eighth victory of the season once Charles Leclerc made a late stop. George Russell finished fifth after making an additional pit visit, leaving him 81 points behind his Mercedes team-mate. Lewis Hamilton retired early with brake trouble. The result illustrated how the timing of a brief neutralisation could outweigh Norris's strong qualifying and race pace.
