George Russell secured second place in the Italian Grand Prix after Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli completed a recovery from 19th on the grid to victory.
An engine penalty had left Antonelli near the back for his home race. Russell started on the front row, but his team-mate combined overtaking with an advantageous tyre choice to make his way through the field.
The decisive difference developed around a mid-race Virtual Safety Car. Antonelli stopped for fresh medium tyres while Russell continued on used hards, leaving the Briton increasingly exposed as the closing laps approached.
Antonelli passed Russell late in the 53-lap race and finished 3.857 seconds ahead. Max Verstappen completed the podium, while Lando Norris beat McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to fourth. Lewis Hamilton was Ferrari's highest finisher in sixth after Charles Leclerc crashed on the second lap. Mercedes left Monza with both cars at the front.
