Ash Sutton has become the first driver to win five British Touring Car Championship titles, securing the 2026 crown with victory at Silverstone on 27 September. The NAPA Racing UK driver started the second race in 12th place and won, making his championship lead unassailable.
BTCC's official race report records Sutton reaching the lead on lap nine of the 22-lap contest, passing Daryl De Leon on the approach to Copse. The result was his ninth victory of the season and the 56th of his BTCC career.
Adam Morgan finished second, 5.449 seconds behind Sutton, with Charles Rainford third. Those positions come from the championship's published Silverstone race result.
Five titles across different machinery
Motorsport UK confirmed the record on 28 September. Sutton's previous championships came in 2017 with the Subaru Levorg, in 2020 and 2021 with the Infiniti Q50, and in 2023 with NAPA's Ford Focus ST. The fifth crown moves him ahead of Andy Rouse and Colin Turkington, who each won four.
The sequence also spans rear-wheel-drive and front-wheel-drive machinery. Motorsport UK identifies Sutton as the only BTCC driver to have won the championship with both layouts, adding a second distinction to his title total.
The championship was settled before the season ended: Motorsport UK's confirmation counted four races still to run when Sutton clinched it. His Silverstone victory therefore decided the drivers' title while leaving further race results to be contested.
